Strezewski to present his research on Harmonist potter
|
There will be an archaeological lecture in New Harmony, Thursday, November 20, at 7 p.m. at Thrall’s Opera House. Dr. Michael Strezewski, assistant professor of anthropology at USI, who was a site director at the archaeological dig site in New Harmony this summer, will be the featured speaker. The lecture is free and open to the public. Strezewski will focus on Christoph Weber, the Harmonist potter. Weber’s residence, shop, and kiln were at the corner of present day North and West streets in New Harmony. Weber made a variety of household ceramics for the 800 residents of New Harmony and his wares were also sold at the Harmonist stores in New Harmony, Shawneetown, and Vincennes. Weber’s operation may have been the earliest site of Euroamerican ceramic manufacture in the state of Indiana. The lecture will be based on Strezewski’s analysis of Harmonist records, archaeological collections, and a recent survey of the kiln site. Strezewski will bring examples of Weber’s ceramics. Historic New Harmony is a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.
