|
Lauren Akin won first place in an essay contest held between students living in USI’s seven Living Learning Communities (LLC’s). Students in the LLC’s read the book This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women for the Bonding through Books program for freshmen and were asked to write a 350 to 500 word essay that told a story about what they believe in a positive, personal manner. Akin (chemistry) won first place for her essay, “The Power of a Cookie.” Tim Nellis (undecided) won second place for “I Believe in the Power of Dreams,” Erin Hampton (pre-elementary education) and Emily Gravenhorst (pre-occupational therapy) tied for third place for “Butterflies” and “Overcoming the Impossible,” respectively. Finalists in the contest read their essays during a November 3 symposium for a panel of judges that included Ryan Reynolds ‘00, features editor for the Evansville Courier and Press; Allison Schafer, a USI cross country All-American; Tracy Zeller ‘89, a local businesswoman; Julie Kissinger, a librarian from Mt. Vernon; and Lynn Beavin, a Signature School student. This I Believe also is Evansville’s One Book, One Community selection this year.
