Health Education Center at USI funds six area projects
|
The Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC), one of six regional health education centers in Indiana, will award $24, 331 in funding for six area healthcare services initiatives. SWI-AHEC is housed in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of Southern Indiana. The grant proposals were reviewed by a committee of regional representatives from area community foundations and agencies. The following projects were awarded funding: Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center-Health Occupations Program, “Anatomy in Clay,” $2800 Anatomy in Clay is a learning system based on kinesthetic anatomy. It uses dynamic projects and activities to generate greater participation in learning anatomy. The program is an alternative to dissection since secondary programs do not use cadaver dissection. Students form muscles, internal organs, nerves, and vessels out of clay. This program enhances aspects of learning such as problem-solving, the integration of anatomical systems, and the retention and transference of knowledge. Gwen Barnett, project director. University of Southern Indiana, “Creating a Diverse Nursing Student Population,” $3285 This grant will be used to strengthen ties to minority communities and under-represented middle school, high school students Programs will be designed to help students develop skills essential to school success, learn more about the nursing profession, obtain admission to nursing school, and ultimately to graduate from a nursing program. Dr. Beth Johnson, project director. St Mary’s Medical Center, “HCAMPS,” $3530 HCAMPS is a week-long summer educational experience for seventh- and eighth-graders to learn about health careers. The local school corporations will help with the recruitment of participants and provide transportation. Margaret Moutseous, Dr. Darla Grossman, and Vic Chamness, project directors. Vincennes University-Jasper Campus, “Healthcare Continuing Education in the VUJC Virtual Hospital,” $5000 Vincennes University-Jasper Campus will conduct interdisciplinary clinical training for health careers students and continuing education for working healthcare professionals in a Virtual Hospital setting. This project will be conducted in partnership with Memorial Hospital in Jasper and the Dubois County Emergency Medical Service, who will provide professionals to serve as both instructors and advisory committee members. Jim McFaul, project director. University of Evansville, “Enhancing Culturally Competent Care for the Medically Underserved in Southwest Indiana,” $4716 This project seeks to enhance the cultural competence of nursing students, nurses, and other health care professionals so that they can more effectively provide care to medically underserved populations in Southwest Indiana. The project will develop culturally sensitive clinical scenarios to be used as simulation experience in simulation laboratories in educational and health care setting in the SWI-AHEC region. Dr. Amy Hall, project director. University of Southern Indiana, “Critical Access Hospital Continuing Education Project,” $5000 This project is a continuing education program for nurses working in critical access hospitals in southern Indiana.
