USI Theatre announces auditions for children, adults
|
University of Southern Indiana Theatre seeks local actors for several roles in its spring season, including productions of Master Harold and the Boys, Athol Fugard’s apartheid-era drama about a teen-aged Afrikaner boy and his relationship with two African servants, and Meet Me in St. Louis, a charming family musical based on the 1944 film starring Judy Garland. Auditions will be held on Thursday, January 15, at the Mallette Studio Theatre in the Liberal Arts Center on campus at USI. Elliot Wasserman, chair of the Department of Performing Arts at USI, will direct Master Harold and the Boys, which runs February 19-March 1. Rehearsals will be held in the evenings and on weekends, and will begin the week of January 19. Wasserman said, “I am seeking two African American actors to play the roles of Sam and Willie. Sam is fortyish. He is an authoritative but gentle presence and serves as a father figure for Hally, the young Afrikaner boy. Willie is in his thirties and has an innocent enthusiasm. He is like a second son to Sam and an older brother to Hally. Both men should be comfortable learning basic ballroom dance and be willing to attempt a South African accent.” Auditions for Master Harold and the Boys will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 15 at the Mallette Studio Theatre. Actors will be asked to read from the play at the auditions; monologues are not required. Scenes are available at the David L. Rice Library on campus at USI or by contacting the director at wasserma@usi.edu. Lenny Leibowitz, assistant professor of theatre at USI and artistic director of New Harmony Theatre, USI’s professional Equity stage, will direct Meet Me in St. Louis, which runs April 16-26. Rehearsals will begin the week of February 24. Leibowitz is seeking a male actor, 50-70, to play Grandpa, one of the leading roles. Actors auditioning for this role should prepare a short monologue and song, and bring sheet music in their key. These auditions will be held at the Mallette Studio Theatre on Thursday, January 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition, Leibowitz seeks two girls, ages seven to twelve, to play the roles of Tootie and Agnes, and several other boys and girls in the same age range to play ensemble roles. Young actors should come prepared with a short song that they can sing by memory. An accompanist will be available for those who bring sheet music. Auditions for these children’s roles will be held at the Mallette Studio Theatre on Monday, January 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. Contact Leibowitz at lbleibowit@usi.edu.
