The University of Southern Indiana’s annual memorial luncheon in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will feature keynote speaker John Carlos, the bronze medalist in the 200 meters at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He and gold medalist Tommie Smith made history by raising black-gloved fists as a civil rights protest at the medal ceremony. In 2008, the two received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage in honor of their stand.

The luncheon will be held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 19, at 11 a.m. in Carter Hall in the University Center. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $10 for employees and the general public and $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the Multicultural Center in the lower level of the University Center. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Carlos attended East Texas State University and San José State University. He set several records in track and field and was a professional football player for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1985, he became a counselor at Palm Springs High School, where he also coaches track and field. Carlos was elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003.

In addition to the keynote, community groups will perform at the luncheon, including the Glenwood Steppers, the Children’s Center for Dance Education, and the Thump Squad, a drum line comprised of students from Culver, Glenwood and other local schools. Designed by Grace, USI’s gospel choir, also will perform.

The menu includes fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, collard greens, garden salad, corn bread muffins, iced tea, water, and coffee, and apple pie or chocolate cake for dessert.

For more information, call the Multicultural Center at 812/465-7188.
