Nationally known evolution expert to speak at USI
The spring 2009 University Core Curriculum Speaker Series commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his Origin of Species with a lecture by Dr. Kenneth Miller, author of Finding Darwin’s God and Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America’s Soul.His lecture, entitled “Darwin, God, and Design: America’s Continuing Problem with Evolution,” will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, in Carter Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Miller is a professor of biology at Brown University, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an author of the most widely-used high school biology textbook in America. The complete schedule of commemorative events includes: February 12 (Darwin’s 200th birthday) Dr. Jim Bandoli, professor of biology, will present “Charles Darwin: In his Own Words” at 3:30 p.m. in Forum III in the Wright Administration Building. “Flock of Dodos,” a video about evolution and intelligent design, will be shown and there will be a question and answer panel beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science. February 17 Dr. Ken Miller will present “Darwin, God, and Design: America’s Continuing Problem with Evolution” at 7 p.m. in Carter Hall in the University Center. February 26 Dr. Rex Strange, assistant professor of biology, will present “Darwin, Evolution, and the Species Problem” at 3:30 p.m. in Forum III in the Wright Administration Building. February 28 Dr. Eugenie Scott of the National Center for Science Education will present “Darwin’s Legacy in Science and Society” at 7 p.m. at the Evansville Museum. February through May “The Legacy of Charles Darwin” exhibition is on display at the Evansville Museum. All events are free and open to the public.
