Dr. Michael Kearns opens spring LA Colloquia Series
Dr. Michael Kearns, professor of English, will present the first spring 2009 College of Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquium at 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 6, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. Kearns’s presentation is entitled, “Writing for the Street, Writing in the Garret: Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, and Private Publication.” It is based on his manuscript, currently under consideration by Ohio State University Press. “Over the space of five chapters, I consider why these two very different writers were drawn to private publication, how they accomplished this end, and how that choice influenced their posthumous careers in both high and popular culture. “My presentation will emphasize the book’s main ideas, especially how ‘writing in the garret’ earns an artist symbolic capital during her or his lifetime and can yield considerable economic capital after death, whereas ‘writing for the street’ (for immediate popularity, reputation, or economic gain) has worked against canonization.” Other speakers for spring 2009 are: • Dr. Oana Armeanu, assistant professor of political science, Friday, February 27. • Dr. Michael Strezewski, assistant professor of anthropology, Friday, March 20. • Dr. Charles Conaway, assistant professor of English, Friday, April 24. All presentations will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Kleymeyer Hall.
