Winter Art Stroll is on Valentine’s Day
New Harmony, Indiana’s Winter Art Stroll will be held Saturday, February 14. All galleries and participating shops will host receptions from 4 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Winter Art Stroll will consist of five participating galleries and shops. The evening promises to be lively and include a diverse mix of artistic approaches and philosophies. Many of the participating galleries will have featured artists present to give brief talks and answer questions. The Women’s Institute and Gallery will host artist Margaret Kissell Gohn and feature her oil paintings from the series (Of) Water and Wildness. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art welcomes artist Carey McDougall. McDougall’s series Re-Routing explores the intricacies of femininity and relationships just in time for Valentine’s Day. Known for her complex and provocative sculpture and installation McDougall continues working with diverse media. Re-Routing contains sculpture and two-dimensional mixed media work created using aluminum, steel, porcelain, polymer clay, plaster, pine, encaustic, and silver. The work is saturated with romantic, anatomical, even seductive imagery, placed in the world of the domestic. This dichotomy helps us question where the individual exists in the scope of the romantic and familial relationships. McDougall further questions this paradox by examining our need for constant need for both growth and stability. McDougall received her Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Oberlin College, her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University and her Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Connecticut. She has exhibited in solo exhibitions all over Ohio and Connecticut and has exhibited at various museum, galleries, and universities, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Sofia Press Gallery in Bulgaria, State University of New York Oneonta, Burlington County College, University of Connecticut Avery Point, and Hartford College for Women. McDougall currently resides in Canton, Ohio, and is an assistant professor of art at Kent State University. Re-Routing runs through March 7. New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
