Now playing at USI Theatre: Master Harold and the Boys

USI launches its 2009 season with Athol Fugard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, Master Harold and the Boys, directed by Elliot Wasserman, chair of the Department of Performing Arts at USI. The play runs February 19 through March 1 at the Mallette Studio Theatre on the USI campus. According to Wasserman, Master Harold and the Boys is “a powerful South African drama set in the 1950s. It explores the pervasive power of racism in the relationship between a young white student and two black men whose friendship is defined on both personal and social levels against the backdrop of apartheid, the formal government policy of racial segregation.” The cast includes USI students Donald Thomas as Sam, Preston Harris-Dunlap as Willie, and Joshua Smith as Hally. In addition to Wasserman, the artistic team for Master Harold and the Boys includes USI Department of Performing Arts faculty members Thomas “Tommy” Thompson as scenic designer and Shan Jensen as costume designer; and USI students Christa Crow as lighting designer and Paige Scott as sound designer. Performances for Master Harold and the Boys are at 7:30 p.m. February 19-21 and 25-28 and 2 p.m. February 22 and March 1.
