The USI Philosophy Club and Gender Studies present V-Day USI 2009, a benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26, in Rice Library Room 17 (the library’s lower level). The event is open to the public. Admission is $5, with proceeds to benefit Albion Fellows Bacon Center and the V-Day campaign to help women in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The USI Philosophy Club has staged “The Vagina Monologues” for the past two years with the bulk of proceeds going to Albion Fellows Bacon Center, which has been providing safe shelter, crisis intervention and education to victims of domestic violence and their children since 1981. In 1990, Albion expanded its services to include victims of sexual assault.

This year, 90 percent of donations will go to Albion Fellows Bacon Center and 10 percent to the V-Day 2009 spotlight campaign, “Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Power to the Women and Girls of the DRC.” More than 3,500 women were raped in North Kivu during the first six months of 2008 alone. The DRC has suffered years of war and despite a formal peace, women are still targeted with acts of violence and many continue to suffer the wounds of past acts of aggression without access to adequate health care.

USI’s production of “The Vagina Monologues” was co-produced by Joyah Brooks, a biology major and Philosophy Club member, and Dr. Mary Lyn Stoll, advisor to the Philosophy Club. Both students and professors will perform. Stoll said, “Even if you have come before, there are always new monologues added in to the show each year. It’s informative and entertaining all at once. And no one should forget that ultimately this is a benefit fundraiser designed to both raise awareness and help women and girls who are dealing with the aftermath of sexual violence and domestic abuse here in the Evansville area.”

Marla Mosher, instructor in Gender Studies, Sociology, and Academic Skills and a performer in this year’s production, has a student who attended a past performance. “He said he wouldn’t normally attend this kind of event, but said it was eye opening and was glad he went.” Susan Ryan, an English major and student performer said, “The Vagina Monologues expose issues that are not solely women’s concern, but human concern. The show will prove valuable to husbands, boyfriends, brothers, and fathers.”
