A reception for the artist will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and is free and open to the public. There also will be a New Harmony Art Stroll that evening. Participating galleries include the Women’s Institute and Gallery, the Antique Emporium, the Antique Showrooms in the Mews, and Harmony Pottery. During the reception at the New Harmony Gallery, Zickefoose will be available to answer questions. In the exhibition “Cockleburs and Pleasantries,” Zickefoose uses the Midwestern American landscape as a setting for her investigations as an artist. Growing up in North Central Iowa, the artist became very familiar with the literal and figurative Midwestern landscape including the codes of language, ethics, traditions, and behaviors. Her work explores the layers of objects that often seem banal, finding importance in the curious and often emotional undercurrents of daily life. Zickefoose received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history and Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from University of Iowa. After working at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio for a year she began graduate school at the University of Florida where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree in multimedia art and ceramics. She has taught at art at USI, University of Wisconsin, and Henderson Community College. She currently is a visiting assistant professor at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana. The exhibition also was made possible through the generous support of the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
