Berger Lecture tackles prejudice
Dr. Leslie Ashburn-Nardo, assistant professor of psychology at IUPUI, will present the 2009 Sydney Berger Lecture, “Speaking out about Prejudice,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center at the University of Southern Indiana.Ashburn-Nardo investigates stereotyping and prejudice, particularly biases over which people have little conscious control. She is interested in the origins of such biases, the impact of stereotypes and prejudice on members of stigmatized groups, and the ways in which people can become aware of and reduce their biases. She holds a Ph.D. from University of Kentucky, master’s degree from University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University. The Berger Lecture Series remembers and honors Sydney Berger, who was one of Evansville’s most respected attorneys. The College of Liberal Arts celebrates the values he cherished by having a speaker each year speak on the theme of civil rights or civil liberties. The lecture is generously underwritten by Charles L. and Leslie A. Berger. For more information, contact Maggie Felton, instructor in psychology, at mfelton@usi.edu or 812/465-1132.
