Heritage Artisans Week
|
Historic New Harmony’s 24th annual Heritage Artisans Week is a five-day celebration of 19th century arts, crafts, and industry. The event will begin April 21 on the grounds of the Atheneum/Visitors Center in New Harmony with the support of the West Side Nut Club of Evansville. This event is perfect for families, clubs, groups, or groups of friends. Heritage Artisans Week focuses on New Harmony’s rich historic traditions, while featuring demonstrations by accomplished regional artisans in period costumes. Spinning/weaving, bookbinding, soap making, cordwaining (shoe making), beekeeping, woodworking, rug making, and traditional Native American life and food will be on display. Gerry Barker of Frontier Resources will bring four oxen on a return trip to New Harmony for Heritage Artisans Week. Barker will gather volunteers for a program that will reenact how a wagon was driven two hundred years ago. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to test their skills at collecting and transporting logs with the help of oxen. Tom Wintczak of Wadesville, Indiana, another returning artisan, will be showcasing pottery. Wintczak was featured in Early American Life magazine’s 23rd annual Directory of Traditional American Craft for his handcrafted slip-trailed redware pottery and sgraffito, a technique of scratching a top layer of color to reveal a color beneath. For those looking for an unusual shopping experience, Heritage Artisans Week offers items that have historical significance while fitting a modern lifestyle. This year the craft artisans will be selling goods they demonstrate on site. Craft demonstrations will take place rain or shine Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the Atheneum/Visitors Center, located at the corner of North and Arthur Streets in New Harmony. Ticket prices are $10 for adults; $9 for AAA/seniors; $5 for children 7-17 years of age. Children six and under are free. Group discounts can be arranged in advance for any day. Families residing in the same household can attend for a single price of $25 or $20 with advanced reservations.
