The reception and awards ceremony is free and open to the public. Joan Kempf DeJong, chair of the Art Department, said, “USI art students and faculty are very excited about the opening of the 39th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition in the new Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries. Our student art work looks great in the professional gallery setting of the beautiful art center and galleries. This exhibition is a very important part of our art gallery dream now realized. We are very grateful to all who have generously contributed in many ways to the art center and the student art show.“ Juror Arturo Sandoval, professor of art at the University of Kentucky, selected works for the show on Thursday and presented the juror’s lecture that evening. Sandoval is known internationally for his innovative weavings and mixed media art quilts. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowships, two Kentucky Arts Council Al Smith Visual Arts Fellowships, two Kentucky Arts Council Al Smith Visual Professional Grants, the Rude Osolnik Craftsman Award, and the 2003 Governor’s Award in the Arts: Artist Award. His fiber art is found in major museums and corporate, public, and private collections. Sandoval’s work will be featured at the grand reopening of the J.E. Smith Gallery at its new location at 413 Main Street on Friday, April 17. This is the first year the Juried Student Art Exhibition will be held in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries, which opened in September. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through April 29. Call the art center at 812/228-5006.
