Combined choirs celebrate Lincoln era music
|
The combined choirs of the University of Southern Indiana and Old North United Methodist Church will perform a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at Old North United Methodist Church in Evansville. This concert will feature a set of Lincoln Era pieces from the “shaped note” tradition of southern harmony. This portion of the concert also will feature music based on the poetry of Abraham Lincoln, two rousing African American spirituals, and Peter Wilhousky’s famous arrangement of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The USI Chamber Choir will perform Mozart’s "Te Deum" and "Laudate Dominum" and Jackson Berkey’s "Ascendit Deus" along with four settings of poems of love and passing by Clausen, Dello Joio, Holst, and Tate. The USI Women’s Choir will feature two Renaissance pieces: "O Splendens Virgo" and "Confitemini Domino," by Constantini. The concert is free and open to the public. Old North United Methodist Church is located at 4201 Stringtown Road. For more information, contact Daniel Craig, assistant professor of music, at 812/464-1736 or dcraig@usi.edu.
