The University of Southern Indiana Filmmakers Club, formed in 2008, will hold its first annual MayDay Film Festival at 3 p.m. Friday, May 1, in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center at USI. The event is free and open to the public.

Several short films - most submitted by USI students - will be shown. At the end of the program, the audience will pick the best films in a variety of categories and the event will end with an awards ceremony. Big Boy’s Mansion, an acoustic band, will perform between films and refreshments will be served.

About 10 short films have been submitted to date. One, “No Answer,” was produced by Nick Faust, a former USI adjunct instructor and filmmaker who currently resides in Los Angeles. Many of the actors in the films are USI theatre and radio/television majors.

Audrey Hillyer, instructor in English, is the club’s faculty advisor. She said the film festival is a way for the new club to garner some attention and showcase members’ work. “I’ve seen some of the videos the film club has made and they are very creative, entertaining, and thought provoking. There will be action, drama, short comedies, and creative pieces that may not fall into any specific category. It should be an interesting sample of what students in the club are working on.”

Joe Barniak, a junior advertising and public relations major, is founder and president of the Filmmakers Club. Two of his short films will be shown at the festival. “It’s always been a dream of mine to make movies,” he said. “I’ve been making them ever since I was a kid.”

Barniak hopes the film festival becomes an annual event. “I’d like this to be an annual film festival, and that we can get more of the community involved,” he said. “There’s no film festival that I know of that’s for filmmakers here in Evansville.”

The Filmmakers Club won the 2008-2009 Outstanding New Student Organization of the Year Award from the USI Office of Student Development Programs.

Hillyer said, “Film is a great medium because students are so interested in technology, even making a quick film with their camera phones. And with the rise of Youtube and various other websites where people can post videos, I think this is going to continue to be a great club for students to enjoy in the future.”
