Hoops' last Commencement, first address

The University of Southern Indiana Commencement will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at Roberts Stadium in Evansville. Over 1,500 students are eligible to graduate. President H. Ray Hoops, who is retiring at the end of June, will deliver the Commencement address. This will be the last Commencement at USI with Dr. Hoops as president, and the first time he will present the address in his 15-year tenure. Jamie L. Johnson, a summa cum laude graduate and the outgoing student trustee on the USI Board of Trustees, will receive the President’s Medal, the highest honor given to a graduating senior for academic work and service to the university. A resident of Newburgh, she will continue her academic work at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the fall. Dr. Kevin J. Valadares, associate professor of health services/administration, will receive the Integra Bank Distinguished Professor Award. A faculty member since 2001, Valadares is program director of the undergraduate program in health services and the Master of Science in Health Administration program. As Distinguished Professor, Valadares will receive a grant from Integra Bank, select a student to receive a scholarship in his name next year, and deliver the address at the fall Commencement in December 2009. Honorary degrees will be presented to Robert M. “Robbie” Kent Sr. and Dr. James W. Murray. Kent, a member of the first USI Eagles basketball team, was chairman and chief executive officer of Kenny Kent Toyota Lexus and Kenny Kent Chevrolet.
