Career and Technical Center students help USI Children's Learning Center
|
The USI Children’s Learning Center will receive new playground equipment on Saturday, May 9, thanks to students at the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center, parents of some of the center’s children, and the USI Foundation. Students in a class taught by Andy Beadles, architectural design/CAD and Project Lead the Way instructor at the Career and Technical Center, were asked to create a diagram of the center’s playground area. The class came to the center, took measurements for the drawing, and spoke to the staff about plans to improve the play area. Pam Buschkill, coordinator of the Children’s Learning Center, said, “When we saw the drawing, we were amazed by the quality of what they did. Not only did we have our playground sketch, but they researched the equipment we were looking for, made diagrams of the objects, and included a list of what was needed and how it could be assembled. We also received a list comparing the cost of purchasing to building the equipment ourselves.” Bushkill suggested to Ginger Ramsden, director of the Center for Education Partnerships and Services, and Dr. Ed Jones, vice provost for Outreach and dean of Extended Services, that parents could assemble the equipment as a volunteer project. The USI Foundation gave the center a grant to cover the cost of the equipment and other playground needs. “The cooperation between Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center, USI Children’s Learning Center parents and the University will result in an enhanced play area for the children,” Buschkill said. The USI Children’s Learning Center is located on Clarke Lane. It is the first right off University Boulevard as you enter campus. You will immediately see the playground on your right.
