Abraham Lincoln is commemorated in music, poetry, film, and sculpture. His words are quoted by poets and politicians. His face appears on stamps, coins, and currency. Mountains, cities, highways, and schools bear his name. And his legacy also is alive in our continuous search for freedom, equality, and opportunity.

"The Lincoln Legacy," the sixth annual Lincoln Institute for Teachers, will be held Thursday and Friday, June 18- 19, on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana. The institute will examine how Lincoln's image and the interpretation of his life have changed over the years and what the legacy of the 2009 bicentennial commemoration means to the country.

Brian Dirck, assistant professor of history at Anderson University, will present an overview of the Lincoln legacy and also address the differing views on Lincoln, race, and slavery. A panel of interpreters from three National Park Service sites will discuss how the interpretation of Lincoln has changed over time. Members of the federal and Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commissions will serve on a panel and address the lasting legacy of these groups and the resources they have made available to teachers. This year's institute also includes a field trip to Historic New Harmony, a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

Mike Capps, chief of interpretation and resource management at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, will present "Lincoln in Film," a free public lecture, at 7 p.m. June 18 in Rice Library Room 0017, in the library's lower level. Using film clips from various movies and television programs, Capps will examine portrayals of Lincoln both in terms of what they say about him and what they say about the times in which they were made.

Capps said, "Abraham Lincoln is so deeply ingrained in our national consciousness that his image can be found practically everywhere - in sculptures, paintings, posters, dolls, decorative items and on screen, in film and television productions. He is the most frequently portrayed American historical figure in the history of film and television. Consequently, many people have formed their opinions of him and gained their knowledge of him based on these portrayals."

Teachers from all grade levels and disciplines are invited to attend. Register by June 9 by calling 800/467-8600 or 812/464-1989, or going to www.usi.edu/hsi.

The Lincoln Institute for Teachers is sponsored by Historic Southern Indiana, an outreach program of the University of Southern Indiana. USI is a Carnegie Foundation Engaged University.
