Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 When David Cousert joined the University in 1984, he was the sole social work faculty member, and social work, sociology, and anthropology were under the Social Sciences Division. The following year, he was made chair of the newly created Social Work Department, and continued in that role until July of this year. Cousert, associate professor of social work, is currently on sabbatical pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership. He holds degrees and certifications from the University of Louisville (MS, ACSW, LCSW, MSSW) and Indiana State University (MS, BA). He and his wife Donna have four grown children: Bryan Knipe, Eric Knipe, Lauren Cousert, and Kristen Cousert, and five grandchildren. Matthew Graham, professor of English, is director of Creative Writing and co-founded the RopeWalk Writers Retreat, the annual writers' conference in New Harmony, Indiana, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. He also is poetry editor of The Southern Indiana Review and has written and published three collections of poetry: A World Without End, New World Architecture, and 1946. He is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Award, a Pushcart Prize, a Maryland State Arts Council First Book Award, two literary fellowships from the Indiana Arts Commission, and a fellowship from the Vermont Arts Studio. Graham holds degrees from The State University of New York, Binghamton (BA), The Johns Hopkins University (MA), and the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop (MFA). He is married to Kathryn Waters, professor of art. Deborah Strueh, accounting supervisor in the Business Office, joined USI in 1982 as a temporary employee, calculating tuition for incoming students on a hand-held calculator. She also worked in the Cashier's Office, Continuing Education, and Purchasing before joining General Accounting as an accounting assistant in 2002. She has been married to her husband Harris for 37 years. Their children Ben Strueh and Shelley Patton are both USI graduates. The Struehs also have six grandchildren. Deborah Weigand is assistant director of Procurement Operations in the Office of Procurement Services. Until 2007, she was a purchasing agent. She holds an associate degree in business and a bachelor's degree in sociology from USI. Her daughter Heidi Fraser is senior distribution services clerk in Distribution Services and son Zachary Weigand is a graphic artist in Publishing Services. She and Zach sat side-by-side at the 2002 Commencement, when they both received bachelor's degrees. Weigand and husband Darrell also have three grandchildren. Founders Day is held annually on or near September 15, the day the University opened in 1965. The University community is invited to attend the program and a reception to follow. The event is sponsored by the Faculty Senate and Staff Council. |
