A healthcare profession's workforce development program is announcing grant opportunities today. Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC) is offering grants for institutions and agencies located in the SWI-AHEC 10-county region of Southwest Indiana and includes the counties of Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick. SWI-AHEC works to improve the distribution, diversity, and quality of the health professions workforce. SWI-AHEC is located in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of Southern Indiana.

Grant applications should address the following objectives of the Southwest Indiana AHEC program:

- Offer career programs about healthcare professions for K-12 and college students, school counselors, with special emphasis on underrepresented minority and disadvantaged pre-college and college students.

- Introduce health professions students to medically underserved communities and promote interdisciplinary education.

- Enhance access to continuing education and clinical information resources for professionals caring for medically underserved communities.

Dr. Nadine Coudret, interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at USI, said, "These grants offer area institutions and agencies an opportunity for funding to support the development of a high-quality, diverse health care workforce for the Southwest Indiana region."

The deadline for grant applications is Friday, October 30, 2009. Successful applicants will be notified by November 23, 2009. Project activities must be completed and funds expended by July 31, 2010. Questions about the grants should be directed to Jennifer L Craig, 812/461-5446 or email jlcraig3@usi.edu. More details about the funding is available online at health.usi.edu/swiahec/.
