New Harmony hosts fifth International Cultural Towns Symposium

The Fifth International Cultural Towns Symposium will be held in New Harmony, Indiana, November 11-13 with presentations and symposium events at the Barn Abbey, Thrall′s Opera House, the Atheneum/Visitors Center, and the Rapp-Owen Granary.

The theme for this year's symposium is "Cultural Landscapes: Cultural Towns." The opening address will be given by Dr. Linda L. M. Bennett, president of the University of Southern Indiana.

Other featured speakers include:

- Donovan D. Rypkema, principal of Place Economics of Washington, D. C., on "Sustainable Economic Development: The Cultural Town."

- Dee Allsop, president of Heart & Mind Strategies, on "Assessing Cultural Values."

- Ian Hunter, co-founder of Littoral Arts Trust in Manchester, England, on "Promoting New Rural Creative Industries, and Art and Rural Regeneration."

- Grover Mouton, director of Tulane Regional Urban Design Center, will moderate a panel session on "Arts, Culture and Community Development." Panel participants will be Jeff Soule of the American Planning Association and Mary M. Schoenfeld of Americans for the Arts in Washington, D. C.

- Ruth Knack, editor of Planning Magazine, will moderate a plenary session on "The Story of Two Cultural Towns."

New this year, continuing education credit will be offered. For more information about the credit, contact Rita Brunner in USI Extended Services at 812/464-1864.

New Harmony residents may attend the educational sessions and presentations free of charge. A conference registration fee of $350 per person will be charged to anyone who resides outside of New Harmony and wishes to attend the symposium. Registration fee includes all meals. Conference guests may reserve a single or double occupancy room at the New Harmony Inn for $104 per night by calling 800/782-8605.
