Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Projects for the Historic Southern Indiana fellowship may include - but are not limited to - consulting, research, service learning, or the creation of workshops or institutes. Preference will be given to applicants who identify a regional external partner organization which will directly benefit from the project. Leslie Townsend, director of Historic Southern Indiana, said, "The Faculty Engagement Fellowship has been a successful way to integrate faculty projects into our work in the region. Our first two projects have been vastly different in nature but are equally beneficial to our constituents. To date the program has been successful and I look forward to seeing this year's applications." Historic Southern Indiana, a program of USI's Extended Services, was created in 1986 to serve a region of 26 counties in southern Indiana. Its goals are to identify, preserve, protect, enhance, and promote the historical, natural, and recreational resources of the region. It seeks to implement those goals through programs in historic preservation, history education, heritage tourism, community development, and scenic byways. The Center for Applied Research will offer two $4,000 Faculty Outreach and Engagement Summer 2010 Fellowships. These fellowships will be rewarded to projects that display a propensity to improve faculty research while supporting economic development, community development, and/or quality of life improvement for the citizens of southwestern Indiana. Examples of appropriate projects include - but are not limited to - a study of underserved populations in southwest Indiana, environmental conservation, and education or research programs. Elissa Bakke, project coordinator for the Center for Applied Research, said, "Extended Services and the Center for Applied Research are excited to be able to offer two summer engagement fellowships. The fellowships are an excellent avenue for encouraging faculty and community outreach through applied research projects that directly benefit a regional organization." Training days for faculty interested in the fellowships will be offered from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, October 19, and noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, in University Center Room 214. Refreshments will be provided. Bakke said, "The fellowships offer a stipend for faculty to pursue applied research projects during the summer break or the awards may also be used to fund projects that are difficult to fund through other means. We strongly encourage faculty interested in community engagement to apply for the awards." More information about the Historic Southern Indiana fellowship is available at www.usi.edu/hsi.
