The University of Southern Indiana community will observe Veterans Day with events on Monday, November 9, and Wednesday, November 11.

"Remembering Soldiers: Past, Present, and Future," a Veterans Day Colloquium, will be presented by USI students from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, November 9, in the Grand Reading Room in Rice Library.

Students in War, Memory, and American History, a multidisciplinary history course examining the memory of wars in American history from the colonial period to the present, will talk about the memory of specific wars in American culture.

Students in Oral Traditions, a communications studies course, will read selections from interviews they conducted with veterans, including those from "the greatest generation" who fought World War II, representing the way memories and meanings of wars are shaped in the present.

Finally, Jason Jolley, a political science major, Iraq war veteran, and current president of the USI Student Veterans Association, will discuss how the availability of technology to soldiers, who have everything from cell phone cameras to personal digital movie cameras, could change the way veterans and the public view and remember war.

The colloquium will conclude with a question and answer session.

War and Memory Exhibit
In addition to the colloquium, a library exhibit will highlight some of the material in the library's collections on war and memory. Located in the two display cases on either side of the main entrance to the Grand Reading Room, the exhibit will include handwritten World War II war letters from soldiers, some personal effects, war bond posters, transcripts of the veterans history project, US census veterans statistics, the Department of Veterans Affairs 2009 Veterans Day Poster, and other books and materials. Information on services available to veterans also will be available at the colloquium.

For more information, call Dr. Tamara Hunt, chair of the History Department, at 812/465-1202.

Veterans Day Remembrance
Later in the week, the USI Student Veterans Association, ROTC, and Veterans Support Services will host a Veterans Day Remembrance at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, by the flags at Centennial Court, located between the Wright Administration Building and the Health Professions Center. If it rains the event will be held in Carter Hall in the University Center.

Gregory Wagoner, assistant director of Residence Facilities and Operations and a Vietnam veteran, will give the keynote address. Wagoner is active with local veterans groups and an advocate for veterans issues in the Evansville community. For more information, call USI Veterans Support Services at 812/464-1857.
