First provost candidate to visit USI November 4 and 5

Dr. Rochon will make a public presentation from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4 in Mitchell Auditorium. He will present his vision for the office of provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and take questions from the audience. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. In addition to his current positions, Dr. Rochon is currently on the Executive Board of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), and is the chair-elect for 2010. At Buffalo State College, Dr. Rochon developed, in conjunction with the school faculty, a five-year strategic plan and focused on local, area, national, and international community collaborative efforts. He includes the development of a community technology resource center focused on bridging the elders-youth digital divide and a new K-8 curriculum focus for a school in the city of Buffalo as major accomplishments. Before accepting his current role four years ago, he was director of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and director and co-founder of the Research Center for Cultural Diversity and Community Renewal. He secured grant funding totaling over $5 million to date. He also held the position of director of Master of Education-Professional Development Program and interim director of the School of Education and associate dean of the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Teacher Education during his tenure at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Several roles he held simultaneously. He earned his undergraduate degree in animal science at Tuskegee University, and has a master's degree in animal science, with an emphasis in reproductive physiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His PhD is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in educational policy studies, with an emphasis on educational history and policy analysis. His teaching career has included work at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Texas A & M University, Washington State University, and University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. His professional and research interests are culturally responsive education and administration, history and philosophy of American education, African and African American education and culture, Hmong and Hmong American education and culture, multicultural education, and media influence on perceptions of class, gender, culture, and race. Dr. Rochon's work has also an international component, particularly relating to the study of education in Ghana. His work has been recognized with awards and honors. He is the recipient of the Ronald McNair Scholarship, a 2009 mentor award. Dr. Rochon received the distinguished alumni award from the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007, and has earned distinction for teaching, dedication to students, and community work.
