Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 In her lecture, Duarte will explore the historical, political, economic and social structures that determine the ethnic and racial stratification of Latinos in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the multigenerational experience of Latinos, contemporary immigration, and urban communities. Duarte received her bachelor's degree from the University of California-Los Angeles and doctorate from Columbia University in New York City. She is an urban sociologist who focuses on race/ethnicity, inequality, and the Latino populations. Her current research addresses how the changing urban landscape of Los Angeles for the last 50 years has affected and been influenced by multiple generations of Latinos. The Berger Lecture Series remembers and honors Sydney Berger, who was one of Evansville's most respected attorneys. He worked with local labor and civil rights organizations and taught at USI for nearly two decades. The College of Liberal Arts celebrates the values he cherished by having a speaker each year speak on the theme of civil rights or civil liberties. The lecture is generously underwritten by Charles L. and Leslie A. Berger. The 2009 Berger Lecture is sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice Studies.
