A lightning rod was placed atop the 97-foot-tall University Center tower during a topping-off ceremony for the UC expansion project on December 3. Construction workers were lifted by crane to the top of the tower to put the lightning rod into place.

The lightning rod features two blue glass balls and a weather vane. The top of the tower was set in place on November 25. View a slideshow of UC tower topping-off events.

Mark Rozewski, vice president for Business Affairs, said, "It is in fact a bona fide grounded lightning rod. It has a decorative element, but it's also functional."

Students, faculty, and staff, members of the USI Board of Trustees, project architect Malcolm Holzman, and representatives from Hafer Associates of Evansville and Weddle Brothers Construction attended the ceremony.

The $17.7 million expanded University Center will open in 2011.
