The University of Southern Indiana's Division of Extended Services, education partner for Innovation Pointe, has developed a small business series that will bring experts in finance and accounting, human resources, and project management to small businesses.

Each series will provide small business owners with information on how to work smart and lean while taking on a variety of roles to maintain and grow their businesses. Sessions have been designed to give small business owners the guidance they need to stay on track and prepare for future initiatives and growth.

The small business series includes:

Finance and Accounting Series
The Finance and Accounting Series will allow business owners to gain the confidence they need to effectively handle financial issues. Participants will learn about financial statements, profitability, effective budgeting, cost control, taxes, inventory management, and other financial tips to run a business more effectively.

Seminar topics include Tax Planning: A Year-Round Process, Cash Flow: Keep Your Business in Cash, and Budgeting: Reaching Your Financial Goals.

Becky Adkins, a private consultant who presents finance and accounting topics to area managers and future CPAs, will instruct the series. Adkins holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Graceland College and a Master of Business Administration degree from Drake University. She received her CPA designation in 1987 and has been serving the regional area as a certified public accountant for over 20 years.

Registration is $75 per session including materials, or $195 for all three seminars. Sessions will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on three Thursdays: February 4 and 25 and March 11.

Human Resource Management Series
Individuals who participate in the Human Resource Management Series will gain an overview of a variety of human resource functions. Upon successful completion of this noncredit series, participants will receive a certificate from USI.

Topics for the seminar include Employment Law: What You Should or Shouldn't be Doing, Effective Recruitment and Selection: Finding the Right Person for the Job, Employee Compensation and Benefits: What You Can Offer, and Employee Relations: Guiding Employee Behavior.

Pam Goedde, senior professional in human resources (SPHR) at Human Element, Inc., will instruct the series. Goedde holds a Bachelor or Arts degree from Hanover College and a Master of Public Administration degree from Indiana State University. Goedde served on the board of the Evansville-area Human Resource Association (EHRA) for 18 years and received EHRA's first HR Professional of the Year Award in 1995. She has served on the Indiana HR State Conference Committee for 14 years, including three years as conference chair.

The registration fee is $75 to $125 per session and includes materials, or $315 for all four seminars. Sessions will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on five Thursdays: February 11, 18, March 4, and April 1 and 22.

Lunch and Learn Series
Three lunch and learn opportunities will also be available at Innovation Pointe. Seminar topics include Successfully Starting Your Project, Creating a Road Map for Completing Your Project, and Measuring the Success of Your Project.

The lunch and learn series will be instructed by Independent Consultant Julie Ann Walker.

The registration fee for each session is $59 or $135 for the series, which includes materials and lunch. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on three Tuesdays, February 16, March 16, and April 20.

USI is the education partner for Innovation Pointe, which opened in 2008 at 318 Main Street in downtown Evansville. The entrepreneurial division of Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville (GAGE), Innovation Pointe assists in the creation and growth of new businesses in the Evansville area.
