The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art will host Feminist Art: New Perspectives, a Women's Art Symposium, Friday through Sunday, February 26-28, at Thrall's Opera House in New Harmony, Indiana. The symposium will include lectures and discussions about feminist art, censorship, decoration, and craft, and is free and open to the public.

Symposium activities on Friday include a lecture, "The Body Politics of Decoration and Handicraft: Re-Visioning 1970s Feminist Art," by Fuchiawen Lien, assistant professor of art history and director of Dishman Art Museum at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

Lectures on Saturday will include Dr. Hilary Braysmith, professor of art history at the University of Southern Indiana, Jean Robertson, professor of art history at IUPUI's Herron School of Art, Peg Zeglin Brand, associate professor of philosophy at IUPUI, and Brenda Weber, assistant professor of Gender Studies at Indiana University-Bloomington. The symposium also will include several artist lectures by a diverse group of women artists currently based in Indiana, including Sarojini Jha Johnson, Anila Agha, and Sarah Bielski.

The Women's Art Symposium will coincide with the opening reception of the Feminist Art of Indiana exhibition, from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, February 27, at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. The exhibition will highlight exemplary feminist art in Indiana juried by Esther Adler, curatorial assistant at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition is supported by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana and the Indiana arts Commission, with funding from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts.

"Feminist History tours of New Harmony" will be offered on Friday and Saturday. Go to www.nhgallery.com for a full schedule of events.

The Women's Art Symposium is sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana Community of Scholars, the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation, and David and Vicki Campbell.
