Dr. Michael Slavkin, associate professor of teacher education, has been named an assistant dean of the Bower-Suhrheinrich College of Education and Human Services.

The appointment will be effective in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Slavkin joined USI in 2000. He holds a M.A. in counselor education from St. Louis University and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Indiana University. He has served as service learning director at the Stanley Hall Enrichment Center in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and has worked as a school counselor and behavioral therapist for the Indianapolis Public Schools.

At USI, he has served as NCATE coordinator and director of graduate programs in the Department of Teacher Education, and recently organized "Fighting the Fires of Hate," the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum exhibit on campus.

Slavkin integrates service learning with his college courses and has been instrumental in securing multiple grants during his tenure at USI. His research interests include service learning, authentic assessment, and juvenile firesetting.

Dr. Julie H. Edmister, dean of the college, said, "Dr. Slavkin's expertise in the area of program evaluation and assessment, service learning, and grants and his years of experience as an outstanding teacher will be of considerable value in his role as assistant dean."

Slavkin joins Dr. Thomas D. Bordelon, associate professor of social work, who was named an assistant dean of the college in July 2009.
