Brian McGuire named Distinguished Professor

It was announced Monday during the Honors program for the College of Business. Nominations from colleagues and former students commended McGuire's expertise in his field, excellence in research, and commitment to the University and community. His dedication to students and ability to inspire both students and faculty are highly regarded. He has encouraged faculty to pursue prolific research agendas and to coordinate their academic research with classroom instruction. A College of Business faculty member said, "It is abundantly clear that the students are most appreciative of his encouragement and engagement with them and the degree to which he takes responsibility for their individual aspirations and future success." McGuire joined the University in 1995. A past chair of the Department of Accounting and Business Law, he was named associate dean in 2008. He also serves as director of the Master of Business Administration program. At the college level, McGuire has served as chair of the College of Business faculty and as chair of several committees, including the Strategic Planning Committee. He served on the AACSB Accreditation Task Force and also on the AACSB Accounting Accreditation Task Force. McGuire is a past recipient of College of Business faculty awards for teaching, research, and service. He has mentored students in undergraduate research projects and also has been involved with student teams that have won regional and national awards in case competitions and regional awards in a "best practices" competitions. At the University level, he is a member of the University Administrative Appeals Committee and the University Graduate Council and past chair of the Student Affairs Committee and Honor Student Symposium Committee. In his profession, McGuire has served on several international boards, including the board of directors for the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), Beta Alpha Psi, and the Institute of Certified Management Accountants. His research is widely published in professional journals, including Review of Business Information Systems, Journal of Business and Economics Research, and Strategic Finance. His work has won a number of "best paper" awards, including the 2007 Lybrand Silver Medal presented by IMA. In the community, McGuire is president of the Board of Directors of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. He also has served in leadership positions for the Buffalo Trace Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Downtown Evansville, Girl Scouts of Raintree Council and the Southwest Indiana Workforce Development Steering Committee. McGuire earned bachelor and master's degrees from the University of South Alabama. He holds a doctorate from the University of Central Florida. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, Certified Business Manager, and Certified Information Technology Professional. USI faculty colleagues choose the recipient of the Integra Distinguished Professor Award. As Distinguished Professor, McGuire will receive a grant from Integra Bank, select a student to receive a scholarship in his name next year, and deliver the address at the fall Commencement in December. |
