Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Wilburn has portrayed Archie since his freshman year, performing at basketball games, community events, and elementary schools. A former athlete he played soccer at Brownsburg High School, he said he's comfortable with the physical nature of the job. "I can't do any crazy acrobatic moves, but I can certainly attempt to dance," he said. Though he had never been a mascot before he began playing Archie, he did have performance experience. "In high school I was in choir and show choir, so I'm comfortable making a fool out of myself," he said. Being USI's mascot is "very enjoyable," he added. It's almost like you're a different person when you're in the suit. As much energy as I have bottled up, and as extroverted as I am, it gives me an opportunity to let loose. And it's healthy because running around in a suit with a giant head I'm burning calories. And I enjoy helping out the University." Wilburn said he follows do's and don'ts he received from a former mascot: "Do be energetic, friendly, respectful, and courteous as possible to all of the attendees. Don't talk, and don't remove your head in public." Other than that, I do my own thing, and figure out what works and what doesn't based on how the crowd reacts," he said. Wilburn is also involved in Campus Outreach, a college ministry, and serves as a resident assistant in Housing and Residence Life. He is the son of John and Quintanna Wilburn of Brownsburg. |
