Albion Fellows Bacon Center and the University of Southern Indiana are co-sponsoring Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, The Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. Inspired by the old saying that you can't understand other people's experiences until you've walked a mile in their shoes, men will literally walk one mile in women's high heeled shoes on Tuesday, April 6, on the USI campus.

Eric Williams, Vanderburgh County sheriff, Stan Levco, Vanderburgh County prosecutor, Terry Winkler, assistant Boonville police chief, Barry Schonberger, USI dean of students, and other men are scheduled to walk in the high heeled shoes and address participants during a post-march rally.

Registration for the walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Liberal Arts Center. Rus Ervin Funk, a gender violence expert, will speak briefly about the men's movement for a non-violent community. The walk will begin just after Funk speaks, at about 6:30 p.m. After the walk, Williams, Levco, and Schonberger, along with students and community members, will participate in a men's pledge to end violence. Men, women, and children are invited to participate.

The walk is sponsored by a number of USI campus organizations, including the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Order of Omega, SGA SOS Grants, and Rugby Club. USI also has an active men's awareness group called Male Allies Against Rape and Violence (MAARV). For more information on MAARVs role in the walk call Todd Schroer, associate professor of sociology, at 812/464-1723. Community sponsors include Altstadt Office City, American Pool Players Association, Fraternal Order of Police #73, Holly's House, Premiums Plus, and SouthWest Graphix.

A woman is raped every 90 seconds in America. Albion Fellows Bacon Center provided sexual assault services to 588 primary and secondary victims in 2009. Albion is a non-profit agency serving victims of domestic and sexual violence that provides emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, short-term individual crisis counseling, support groups, and legal and medical advocacy to victims and their friends and family. All of the services are free of charge. For more information contact Brandi Watson or Chrissy Wicks at Albion Fellows Bacon Center, 812/422-9372 or bwatson@afbcmail.com or cwicks@afbcmail.com.
