Four guest speakers, including two students and two professors, will discuss why children should be taught tolerance, and why it's important to end the silence in college. Silent March, 11 a.m. to noon Friday, April 16, in front of the Liberal Arts Center. This event will consist of a silent march, highlighting issues LGBT students face, with a focus on the fact that too often they are forced into silence, along with their allies. "Out in the Silence," 3 p.m. Friday, April 16, Forum I, Wright Administration Building. This documentary follows the story of a small American town confronting a firestorm of controversy ignited by a same-sex wedding announcement in the local newspaper. According to the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, 86.2 percent of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 44.1 percent reported being physically harassed, and 22.1 percent reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation. The Day of Silence is intended to shed light on the many problems for LGBT students that go ignored, and to encourage schools to adopt policies to protect students.
