Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 "I'm excited that the students have been recognized for their accomplishments in a state wide competition," said Erin Gibson, instructor in communications and advisor for The Shield. "I'm especially pleased that they placed in the overall design and best single issue categories because they redesigned the paper when they returned from the College Media Convention in Austin in November. They immediately applied what they learned, and the result was a stronger newspaper." Gibson said the number of awards may have set a record for the student newspaper. "This by far the most we've received at one time in recent history," she said. The Shield won first place Best Staff Editorial for its response to administrators' concerts about an advertising insert for Southern Illinois University-Carbondale: "Our response to last week's advertising." A judge wrote, "This editorial not only explains an important thought process by editors who allowed the ad insert to run, it also explains why the newspaper 't reject such advertising and survive. It was gutsy to run the ad for a 'competing' university - and to tell University of Southern Indiana administrators why they would do it again." The Shield swept the Best Entertainment Column category. "Newton's creation set to a beat" won first place for former editor Jon Webb, who is now sports editor at the Glasgow Daily Times. Clare Pratt won second place for "Freaks and Geeks." No third place award was given. Lindsey Ziliak and Kelly Monroe won first place for Best Sports News Story with "Ten countries represented at annual game" The Shield staff won second place in best overall design for its November 12, 2009 issue. That issue also won the staff third place for Best Single Issue. Andrew Foster won second and third place awards in Best Sports Column with "Dungy: More than NFL Coach" and "Let the Punishment Fit the Crime" respectively. Brittany Goshert won second place and Anna Gerhardt won third place for Best News Photo, and Ian Burleson won third place for Best Feature Photo. Dr. Wayne J. Rinks, chair of the Communications Department, said, "These accomplishments speak volumes about the quality of our student newspaper and our journalism program."
