Betty Vawter Senior Editor, News & Information Services 812/480-1873 The competition begins at 4 p.m. in Carter Hall of the University Center. The public is invited to attend. Thirty teams with up to four students each will vie for trophies and medals as Lego Mindstorms robots they have designed, constructed, and programmed demonstrate their ability to negotiate a course. This year′s competition requires the robots to travel between two 3-inch platforms. The robots may accomplish the task in various ways, such as going up and down ramps or by using bridges across gaps. ASME members designed the course. Each team will compete in two rounds of competition. Awards will be made at 8 p.m. in a closing ceremony. Students in ASME sponsored a workshop in March to familiarize competition participants with the construction and programming of Lego Mindstorms robots. Kenneth W. Schnautz, president of the USI chapter of ASME, said the competition exposes area students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. STEM fields offer an expanding number of career opportunities and are important to a high-tech, global economy. Schnautz said, “The competition is an outreach for USI and our chapter. It provides ASME members an opportunity to gain project management skills and become role models for other students.†Dr. Natasha L. Smith, assistant professor of engineering, is ASME faculty advisor. The Southwest Indiana STEM Resource Center and the USI Pott College of Science and Engineering join the ASME student chapter in sponsoring this year′s competition. |
