Brandi Schwartz Marketing Coordinator Outreach & Engagement 812/464-1854 Accompanied by Sarah Truax Versteeg, advisor for the Eagle Road Crew and area coordinator in Housing and Residence Life, students visited Covenant House for homeless teens, Kingdom House for low-income families, and Haven of Grace, an emergency shelter for pregnant teenagers, to complete a variety of tasks. Projects included cleaning, making repairs, sorting donations, and working in an after school day care program. The experience exposed students to issues such as homelessness and poverty. Each student kept a journal to record his/her feelings on the projects and how the work impacted the community. Participating student Amber Kessler, said, "You always hear about homelessness and poverty, but to actually see it puts it in a whole new prospective. I wish more people would have been able to see what I saw." Other participating students included Zachary Beam, Laura Mason, and Kegan Walker. The Eagle Road Crew is a volunteer organization through Housing and Residence Life. Once a month, the group completes a service project in the Evansville community. The project served a co-curricular activity through Service Learning. For more information, or to get involved with the Eagle Road Crew, contact Versteeg at struax@usi.edu. |
