Betty Vawter Senior Editor, News & Information Services 812/480-1873 Professor of accounting and associate dean of the College of Business, McGuire is the recipient of the 2010 Integra Distinguished Professor Award. The award is presented for significant achievement in teaching, leadership, and service. McGuire recently returned from Germany and the Netherlands where he represented the University and the College of Business. A four-member delegation from USI visited six universities. Their goal was to strengthen longtime exchange agreements with two universities in Osnabrueck, Germany, and explore relationships with four universities in the Netherlands. USI President Linda Bennett wants to expand the international experience for both students and faculty. The group met with their counterparts at the European universities. They also took greetings from Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel to the "friendship" city of Osnabrueck. The delegation discussed traditional student and faculty exchanges as well as virtual collaborations that could involve faculty sharing syllabi and assignments and students working in virtual teams on cases throughout the semester. The USI travelers took public transportation and managed their own luggage to simulate the experience students might have if they studied abroad in these locations. "All in all, the trip was productive. We hope it will have long-lasting repercussions," McGuire said. A longtime member of the Institute of Management Accountants, McGuire has been active at the local, regional, and international levels. He will serve as chair-elect of the international organization in 2010-11 and as chair and chair emeritus in the following years. IMA was organized in 1919. McGuire will be the first individual from Indiana to lead the 65,000-member group. About 250 professionals share experiences in the Evansville chapter. The USI Accounting Club is a student chapter. "MA has had a positive impact on USI," McGuire said. "It offers great networking opportunities for professionals and students." In 2009, USI students received $9,000 in benefits from IMA. The local chapter provided $1,000 in scholarship awards. Two teams of students brought home a total of $8,000 in awards from the organization's annual Student Case Competition. Both teams placed in the Final Four of the national competition, and one team earned first place. McGuire will attend IMA's 91st annual Conference and Exposition in Baltimore in June. He also is a member of the national board of Beta Alpha Psi, an honor society for students and professionals in financial information. McGuire provides service to the profession as a site visitor for both AACSB International (the accrediting body for colleges of business) and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Visiting teams of experts evaluate programs to provide feedback to the universities under review and to the accrediting agency. "The opportunity also benefits team members because we learn from other programs," McGuire said. McGuire is director of the Master of Business Administration program. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses as well as courses in post-baccalaureate certificate programs. He takes an intense interest in the future of students. "Accounting has a number of sub-areas. Different people have different skill sets or career goals. We want students to understand early in their college career what the profession is like and how to prepare to achieve their goals," he said. Colleagues have a high regard for McGuire's role as a faculty mentor. "We have a mentoring program to give new faculty members ideas for techniques that improve teaching and research," he said. "We want our faculty members to be successful." The son and grandson of accountants, McGuire did not set out to major in accounting, but a role in student government at the University of South Alabama nudged him in that direction. After being elected treasurer of the Student Government Association, he needed to know accounting. "I took some courses, liked them, and, before I knew it, I was getting a major in accounting," he said. Unofficially, he also earned a major in industrial management. McGuire grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He began his career at an accounting firm in Mobile, Alabama, and later became director of corporate operations for a health services firm in Mobile and executive director of a subsidiary in Foley, Alabama. He also has served as a consultant in a number of areas. McGuire earned bachelor and master's degrees from the University of South Alabama. He holds a doctorate from the University of Central Florida. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, Certified Business Manager, and Certified Information Technology Professional. His research is widely published in professional journals. Having an impact he can see directly fuels McGuire's love of teaching. He joined USI in 1995. "When I was in public accounting or healthcare, I like to think I was having an impact, but I didn't see it immediately," he said. "It's rewarding to hear from students and graduates that I've had an impact on them." In the community, McGuire is president of the Board of Directors of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. He also serves on the boards for the Buffalo Trace Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of Raintree Council. He is a member of the Church Council and chairs the finance committee at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. "I do travel a lot," McGuire said. "It is uplifting to hear people in different locations say they have heard great things about USI. Last year at a conference in Denver, I overheard somebody say: 'They're from USI. They have a great accounting program. Their students are competitive.' Our students' accomplishments are being recognized on a national level. It shows that the work and travel are paying off." The Integra Distinguished Professor Award was presented at spring Commencement. Faculty colleagues choose the recipient. As Distinguished Professor, McGuire will receive a grant from Integra Bank, select a student to receive a scholarship in his name next year, and deliver the address at Commencement in December. |
