Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Today, students in a Fishing class taught by Dr. Bryon Martin will offer free fishing lessons for children at a "Fishing Derby" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Garvin Park in Evansville. Fishing equipment and bait will be provided. Children under 17 don't need a fishing license, but should bring a parent or guardian. "It's hands-on, experiential learning for the students," Martin said. Martin's Contemporary Issues in Sport, Physical Education, and Exercise Science course formed five committees last spring. They included a fishing committee, an Evansville Trails Coalition committee, a history of walking committee, a biking and rolling committee, and a committee that met with Dr. Andrew Buck'ss Social Movements course, which compared data about other mid-sized cities to Evansville. "It was a good interdisciplinary project,"Â Martin said. Martin's spring classes planned events for summer Contemporary Issues and Fishing classes to participate in during Walk and Roll Week. On Monday, the students taught fishing lessons at Audubon Park in Henderson, Kentucky. "A single mom brought her son last night, and it was so rewarding seeing her work with him," Martin said. "She was very interested in how the reel worked, how to put the worm on the hook, and how to cast." The fishing equipment was purchased with a grant from the USI Foundation and will be used for future Walk and Roll Week events. |
