Archuleta named Midwest Region Coach of the Year
|
In 2010, Archuleta has led the Screaming Eagles to a berth in the NCAA Division II National Championship Series for the second time in four years. He also has guided the Eagles to the Midwest Region crown, the first GLVC Tournament championship in 17 years, and to the third straight GLVC West Division title as well as a school-record 48 victories. Archuleta is 166-75 (.689) in four seasons with USI and is 314-209 (.600) in eight-plus seasons as a head coach. The ABCA also honored junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) and junior pitcher Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) with first team All-Midwest Region honors, while junior outfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) was named second team. Mooney, who was named to the NCAA II Midwest Region All-Tournament team last weekend, is batting .382 with a school-record tying 14 home runs and 66 RBIs. He also has 13 doubles and two triples in 60 games for the Eagles in 2007. He also has been named first team Daktronics All-Midwest Region and first team All-GLVC. Leach has been a dominating force again for the Eagle, producing an 11-1 record and a 3.02 ERA in 25 appearances this season. He was 2-0 with a save last weekend in the regional, moving his career record to 23-2 in his first three seasons, two short of the all-time USI career record. Like Mooney, Leach has earned regional All-Tournament honors along with being named Daktronics first team All-Region and first team All-GLVC. Huling earns second team All-Region honors for the second week in a row. He was designated Daktronics second team All-Reigon a week ago and finished the week with All-Tournament honors at the regional. The junior outfielder is hitting .399 with 49 RBIs and four home runs in 58 games for the Eagles this season. USI starts NCAA II National Championship Series action Sunday when it plays Minnesota State University Mankato in the first round. The championship series runs May 22-29 in Cary, North Carolina. |
