Fans enjoy national championship team
Caleb Ehmke, senior right fielder, holds the national championship trophy. Ehmke caught the ball for the final out of the national championship game. He is from Waterloo, Indiana.
The national champions were met by cheering fans on the USI quad on May 31 and were welcomed home by USI President Linda L. M. Bennett and Evansville Mayor Jonathon Weinzapfel. During the victory celebration, team members autographed baseballs, shook hands, and received hugs and big smiles from fans of all ages. View a slideshow of the celebration here. The Eagles may not have reached the Saturday championship game had it not been for the outstanding effort turned out by junior right-handed pitcher Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana), the NCAA II Championship Series Most Outstanding Player. Dennis, who went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA, pitched seven commanding innings to lead the Eagles to their series-opening win over Minnesota State University-Mankato Sunday night, then returned on Friday to throw another seven masterful innings to lead the Eagles past Georgia College & State University in the semifinal. Sandwiched in between Dennis's outings was a complete-game gem tossed by sophomore right-handed hurler Josh Schultze (Evansville, Indiana). Schultze scattered eight hits throughout nine innings while giving up just one unearned run to lead USI past Kutztown University in the second-round contest. The year-end team effort produced for USI the GLVC regular season championship, the GLVC Tournament championship, the NCAA Midwest Region championship, and the 2010 NCAA II national championship. The team finished the season with a school record 52-14. Souvenir shirts and caps on sale National championship t-shirts and baseball caps will be on sale in the USI Bookstore.
