Second Skills Summit set for June 12

Brandi Schwartz Marketing Coordinator Outreach & Engagement 812/464-1854 In an effort to ease the transition for Whirlpool employees and other displaced workers, the Skills Summit will provide information on in-demand skills needed in the job market today. Area employers will also be on hand to provide information on skills they require when hiring new employees. The Summit is presented by Better Together, a consortium of area colleges and community resources in cooperation with Whirlpool and Local 808. Representatives from Ivy Tech Community College, Vincennes University, Henderson Community College, and Harrison College will provide information on more than 100 technical certificates and associate degrees. University of Evansville and USI will showcase information on a variety of associate and bachelor degree programs as well as specialized offerings, including a certificate program in entrepreneurship. Representatives of the United Way of Southwestern Indiana will be on hand to discuss community resources. Counselors from the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation and career services personnel from the various colleges will also be on-site. Displaced workers who have successfully transitioned into new careers will share personal stories on how they became a licensed practical nurse, an HVAC operator, and a computer network technician.
