The University of Southern Indiana′s archaeological field school will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, at the site of this summer′s excavation in New Harmony, Indiana.

The public will have an opportunity to see the excavation, view artifacts, and meet students and staff participating in the dig, located behind the historic Lenz House at the corner of North and West streets.

This year′s field school is focused on the Harmonist pottery kiln. Christoph Weber, the Harmonist potter who lived and worked at the spot from 1815 to 1824, made redware pottery for the entire Harmonist community.

Dr. Michael Strezewski, USI assistant professor of anthropology, has collected archival data on redware ceramic production from the Harmonist records and has written and presented several papers based on his work. Strezewski has led archaeological field schools in New Harmony since 2008.
