Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Kathy Weinzapfel, career coordinator in USI's Career Services and Placement, said, "As classroom sizes continue to increase, USI is eager that our student teachers be prepared to address behavior issues that coincide with more students per class. Partnering with SINE for this event will assist our faculty and students in becoming better prepared to address this concern." The presenter is Dr. Fred J. Johnson, noted author and executive director of Educational Resources Services in Flint, Michigan. An advocate of proactive methods of classroom behavior management, Johnson has presented more than 2,000 seminars on student behavior issues. The seminar at USI is based on his book, Proactive Discipline for Reactive Students. This seminar will focus on differentiation of typical and atypical student behavior and the skills needed to literally change behavior. Most educators respond to negative student behavior with negative consequences. Consequences only delay the behavior and actually reinforce these negative patterns. This training will demonstrate how to turn typical negative educator responses into positive proactive intervention strategies that will change the behavior for a lifetime. The training focus will be on utilizing behavioral modification techniques that are practical and easy to implement. All strategies taught will be based on Johnson's concept of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), with the goal of helping educators find ways to spend more time teaching and less time involved in discipline. The cost to attend is $99. Preregistration is required. For more information or to register, go to the SINE website. |
