Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Most employees won't notice a difference in the process of obtaining a vehicle, and the cost to departments will be virtually unchanged, said Miles Mann, assistant director of Facility Operations. "The vehicle reservation process, the departmental charge-back process, and the vehicle pick-up and return process is basically the same for most of our customers," he said. "The primary difference is that our customers will no longer be driving USI-owned vehicles." Athletics, Extended Services, Admission, and Theatre will work directly through the companies. "They use about half of the vehicles, so we made arrangements that will make an easier transition for them," Mann said. Switching to rental cars is part of the campus-wide effort to reduce spending. "The Physical Plant typically spends $225,000 a year on new vehicle purchases, just to keep rotating the fleet," Mann said. "We'll let the rental agencies buy their own vehicles and we will rent them from those rental agencies. We should see a $225,000 savings from that approach." Keys for rental vehicles will still be picked up in the Physical Plant Control Room, which is open 24 hours a day. Vehicles will be parked at the west end of Parking Lot K (the Valley Lot). If it is more convenient, customers may also pick up a vehicle from one of the rental agencies' satellite locations. Reduction of the fleet will create more parking in Parking Lot G on the west side of campus, but not all of the vehicles will be eliminated. Some of the newer vans will be transferred to Maintenance, which has 10 older vehicles that will be auctioned off. The Department of Athletics will receive the six wrapped vans. Extended Services will receive one vehicle, and Housing and Security will each get one eight-passenger van. The new vehicle rental procedures and Vehicle Request Form are posted online.
