Students at the University of Southern Indiana can participate in a contest to invent the next competitive outdoor sport game. The winning prize is a $1,000 cash and a chance for a team member to compete for an internship at Evansville-based Escalade, Inc., a consumer products company that operates divisions in sporting goods and office products.

Robert J. Keller, president and chief executive officer of Escalade, Inc., introduced the 2010 Ideation Contest to University of Southern Indiana students in a campus presentation on Wednesday, September 15 for the College of Business. "I want to inspire the students to become innovators and create innovative games," he said.

Ideation contest

The Escalade Ideation Contest will challenge students to develop a new game that Escalade Sports can produce and market. The basic requirement is to create an outdoor game that requires skill and social interaction. Student teams will develop the rules and necessary equipment. The competition is an integral part of the first course in the college's new entrepreneurship minor. Details are online at http://business.usi.edu/exec-residence/contest.aspx.

The 60-day competition will conclude prior to Thanksgiving break. Finalists will make presentations to executives from Escalade and other judges.

Keller was named president and chief executive officer of Escalade, Inc., in 2007 and elected to the board in 2008. His consumer products experience includes a variety of strategic marketing and manufacturing leadership roles with Coca-Cola, Clorox, and Kodak. Keller earned a bachelor's degree in industrial and systems engineering from Georgia Tech in 1983 and completed the Senior Executive Finance program at Harvard Business School in 2003.

A global company, Escalade is the world's largest producer of table-tennis tables and one of the largest marketers of premium basketball systems, playground equipment, and archery products. It also is the leading producer of data security and print finishing equipment.

The College of Business executive-in-residence program is an annual event that gives students a glimpse into the world of business executives.
