Sarah Harlan Administrative Associate News & Information Services 812/465-7005 “It's always tricky to find the optimal academic calendar, but these changes should help students feel less stress during the fall semester and when preparing for final exams," said Brian Posler, assistant provost. “In addition, it should grant faculty members more flexibility in allowing their pedagogical decisions to drive the calendar rather than the other way around." Fall break A fall break is scheduled for students and faculty beginning in 2011. The fall break will occur on October 10-11, 2011 and in subsequent years always on a Monday and Tuesday to maintain an equal number of Monday, Tuesday classes per semester. An equal number of class days will be in both the fall and spring semesters. Spring commencement will be moved to Saturdays beginning in 2012 in order to avoid holding the ceremony on Mother's Day. The 2012 Commencement will be on April 28. A study day prior to the beginning of final exams has been added to the calendar beginning next fall, and classes will not be held on that day. Winter break 2011 will be increased by three days. One day has been added in December and two additional days in January. Faculty and administrators have had input into the changes. While serving as interim provost, Dr. Nadine Coudret convened a Calendar Task Force to develop an optimal academic schedule. Dr. Brian Posler, assistant provost, Lesa Cagle, then-chair of Faculty Senate, Dr. Kathy Rodgers, chair of Council of Department chairs/directors John Deem, associate vice president for Student Affairs Sandy Farmer, registrar and Bob Wolfley, then-president of the Student Government Association, served on the committee.
