At the end of spring 2010, the University's student publications committee selected senior Zach Evans as editor in chief of The Shield for the 2010-2011 academic year. Evans, a political science major and journalism minor, joined The Shield staff in fall 2009 as a staff writer, and was hired as news editor in January.

The son of Stacy and Jerry Warren and Jim Evans, all of Evansville, Evans is a graduate of Bosse High School. He plans to pursue a career in journalism.

"As news editor, I felt I was the best candidate to apply," Evans said. "I have strong ideas for the paper I want to see manifested. First and foremost, I want to increase the visual element of the paper. Our content has improved greatly over the years. I think you have to combine the two elements to have a true newspaper: you need to have a visual flow and have the stories be strong."

Evans collected more ideas this summer at the Management Seminar for College News Editors at the University of Georgia-Athens, where he attended lectures and seminars regarding ethics law, recruiting, and other management issues. "We learned about how to dig for stories and get to the heart of a story, and how to work with little funding and a small staff."

The group also toured CNN's headquarters in Atlanta.

The Shield boasts a new masthead this year, designed by visual editor Jimmy Pyles. "We wanted to have our own personal mark for this year of The Shield and increase the aesthetic value," Evans said. "People like to pick up things that look good, and we wanted to make it more professional-looking."

A number of special issues will be offered throughout the year. The transportation issue came out September 16. "We will also have a parents and families issue, an election issue, two graduation issues, and a homecoming issue. We will also put out a basketball season preview."

The Shield's new website debuts in October. "The new website will have a completely updated interface," Evans said. "It will be easier to use and more aesthetically pleasing." Students and employees will be able to sign up to receive weekly updates and breaking news.

While every year brings changes to the student newspaper, Evans will preside over a milestone for The Shield when the staff moves into new space in the University Center expansion in spring. Evans is looking forward to moving out of the UC's lower level, where he said the staff feels cut off. "I think people feel we're segregated. It will help to be in the thick of it all."

The Shield staff meets at 3 p.m. every Monday in The Shield office, (currently) located in Room 003 in the lower level of the University Center. "We're always hiring writers and photographers and they are paid positions," Evans said. "Just show up and introduce yourself, and we'll go from there."
