Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Dr. Amie McKibban, assistant professor of psychology, and Dr. Stephanie L. Young, assistant professor of communication studies, will conduct the three hour interactive workshop. The training is sponsored by Spectrum, USI's gay-straight alliance, and the Student Government Association. "With the recent media attention given to the pattern of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual) youth suicides, advocates are demanding national action be taken to address youth bullying, harassment, and the need for safety and inclusion for LGBT students at high schools, colleges, and universities," Young said. "Additionally, a 2010 national report by the Research Institute for Higher Education found significant harassment and chilly campus climates for LGBT individuals." The goal of the workshop is to provide campus Safe Zones where individuals affected by homophobia, hateful acts, and sexual violence can safely go for support and assistance. Persons displaying the Safe Zone symbol identify themselves as advocates against homophobic and heterosexist attitudes and actions. Students will learn about LGBT topics and terminology, receive recourses and referral information, and learn the necessary skills to being an ally (a straight supporter) for the LGBT community. The workshop is open to all students, but registration is limited to 75. Free breakfast will be served. Register online at www.usi.edu/opra/Surveys/safetyzone.htm. For more information, contact Young at 812/464-1737 or slyoung@usi.edu. The opportunity to participate in a campus-wide faculty and staff training is also being established. For information about the faculty and staff training, contact McKibban at 812/465-1222 or armckibban@usi.edu. |
