The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art presents artist-in-residence Jim Buchanan beginning Monday, November 1. During his three-week residency, Buchanan will be working on a site-specific labyrinth installation in one of the historic log cabins on West Street in New Harmony. The construction of Buchanan's installation will correspond with the 12th Annual Gathering of The Labyrinth Society November 12-14.

Buchanan will be assisted in the work by four USI art students: Roxanne Burton, Diana Knopinski, Ashten Stenftenagel, and Christopher Wilke. The installation can be viewed beginning Saturday, November 20, during the New Harmony Art and Antiques Stroll.

Buchanan was born in Ireland to a family of artists. Originally trained as a landscape architect, he has installed over 50 different commissioned works throughout Europe and as far south as Argentina. The majority of Buchanan's work focuses on the mythology and experience of the walking labyrinth.

Buchanan has created labyrinths out of light projections, concrete, stone, earth, plastic cutlery, sand, candles, cloth and bamboo, and numerous other materials. His projects include a "Light Catcher" labyrinth created out of bamboo and cloth at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield England. A light labyrinth was created out of 800 tea lights and three tons of sand in Essex, England, in which a large group created a human chain and walked through the labyrinth together. "Mallum Labyrinth," an earthen labyrinth, was created in the Netherlands out of 4,500 tons of soil. That labyrinth spanned 115 feet and rose five feet high on the site of an old castle and was designed to replicate the labyrinth at Knossos.

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 812/682-3156 or visit www.nhgallery.com.
